Why do you need your eyes tested?

Eye exams help detect eye problems at their earliest stage — when they’re most treatable. Getting tested regularly is critical for the eye health of your whole family so that interventions can be applied as a response to many different problems. Some of these problems are as follows and tests for these are included in our comprehensive eye exams.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that affect the optic nerve and lead to impaired vision and blindness. Screening is critical to prevent eye damage and blindness. Early detection is the first step in the management and prevention of these diseases.

There are certain groups that are more at risk of glaucoma such as those over age 40, people of African, Asian or Hispanic descent, those with a family history of the disease, some conditions increase your likelihood of developing glaucoma, including diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) migraines, poor blood circulation, etc., certain eye conditions including high fluid pressure in the eye, farsightedness, nearsightedness, thinning of the optic nerve and corneas that are thin in the center increase your risk of glaucoma, and lastly eye injuries or surgeries: Blunt trauma, multiple eye surgeries and even medical treatments such as long-term steroid medication use may lead to glaucoma.

Colour Blindness

Our colour vision test can determine your perception of colour too, and tell if you have vision problems such as:

protanopia: difficulty distinguishing blue from green and red from green
tritanopia: difficulty distinguishing yellow from green and blue from green
deuteranopia: difficulty distinguishing red from purple and green from purple
achromatopsia: complete color blindness (a rare condition, in which only shades of grey are visible)

While color blindness doesn’t often have any serious side effects it could be a marker of an underlying illness such as glaucoma or other diseases. Getting your family checked can also give you peace of mind.
